Proper Grill Storage for a Safe & Clean BBQ
Storing your clean BBQ when not in use seems as easy as just throwing a cover over it and calling it a day but, I assure you, proper grill storage doesn’t end there. If you’re living somewhere reasonably warm all season, like San Diego, you don’t have to bring your BBQ in for the colder months, but it wouldn’t hurt to do so. Let’s go over proper storage and how to keep your clean BBQ looking and working like new.
A Clean BBQ is Rodent Free
If you plan on storing your grill outside for the winter, or when you don’t plan on using it for a while, it’s not uncommon to attract small rodents for inside nesting – it’s the perfect spot for them to stay clear of the elements and live off any food particles left over on the grill (hence, a clean BBQ). So, before popping that grill in the garage for the season make sure you do a really detailed clean of all cooking surfaces.
Ew, Not a Moldy BBQ
The same left-over food and debris that attracts mice and other rodents to your BBQ also invite another unwanted guest…. mold. Mold is unlikely to grow in the winter (with temperatures below freezing) but spring and fall both have milder temperatures, which mold loves. To avoid mold growth on your clean BBQ, you want to deep clean it and remove all food and oil from cooking surfaces. Have you noticed the trend? If you take your clean BBQ out of storage and there is some mold, your grill wasn’t so clean and requires a deep clean.
Pro Tip: When firing up the grill for the first time this season, allow it to run, on high, for at least 15 minutes before use.
Be Safe With Propane
If your grill runs on propane and you store it indoors for any reason, remember your propane tank must stay outside. Don’t store the tank under your house, or near any heat sources. Store the propane tanks in an upright position and check the hoses for any grease build up. If the grill is stored outside as well, you can keep the tank connected, just close the propane valve. If your grill is moving indoors, disconnect the tank and tape a plastic bag over the grills gas line, so no spiders or other insects make it their new home.
Additional Storage Measures
To prevent any rust, we suggest coating the burners and other metal grilling components in oil to repel moisture.
Remember grilling is supposed to be fun and creating delicious food, but having a clean BBQ and storing your grill will ensure all parts stay in great working order. Don’t forget to deep clean before storing for the season!
