Memorial Day is just around the corner, and the month of May signifies the start of barbecuing season.  This May, celebrate the season with a variety of barbecue techniques, including smoking, roasting, baking, braising and grilling.   Barbecuing offers endless possibilities to fire up your favorite dish and satisfy all as you kick off summer.

According to National Barbecue today, there are a variety of activities we can enjoy to kick off the month.

There are some interesting facts to consider when enjoying barbecue season

Check out this interesting fact when firing up the grill this month.

Grilling and barbecuing differ

Grilling and barbecuing are not the same thing.  When you’re grilling, the amount of fat is reduced from the meat.  While barbecuing, the meat is slowly cooked to bring about flavor.  In barbecue, the food is not in direct contact with heat, while in grilling, the food is over direct heat.

Barbecues times can vary

Did you know that barbecuing can last a very, very long time?  Depending on what is getting cooked, barbecuing times can vary a great deal.  Some techniques can take up to 18 hours or longer.    If you are king of the grill, then you don’t need to worry about overcooking your meat.  However, it does happen to many of us.  Try to follow this handy guide

Enormous barbecues

Barbecues can be enormous. The longest barbecue measured 8,000 meters in Bayambang, Pangasinan, Philippines, in 2014.  Speaking of large barbecues, you might be wondering how large of a grill you need or if it’s time to size up. Stop to think about if you are overcrowding the grill.  When trying to squeeze too much food onto the grill at once, it can become difficult to manage the cooking.  Few people need a giant grill, but most people can take advantage of having a bit more cooking space.

Grilling more than meat

You can grill a lot more than meat and seafood.  Although grilling is most commonly associated with meat and seafood, you can grill everything from lettuce to peaches to avocados to watermelon.  That’s why May is a great time to try new recipes.  You can also try grilling new things beyond just the meat.  Ever considered grilled chocolate banana foil packs?  Or how about pizza roll kabobs?  There are many new grilling ideas out there.
